Although no residence can be made completely burglar proof,
there are steps that can be taken which will help reduce the risk of a
successful break in. One is environmental design, which deals with the
outside of your home. Burglars prefer the cover of darkness, and areas
where they won't be easily seen. Lighting is an excellent
deterrent. Place motion sensor lights at approach routes to the home,
both front and back. Cut back any shrubbery that may offer a blocked
view to doors or windows. Another step is to install a high-grade
deadbolt with a 1" shank, on each entry door. Remove one screw
from each door hinge, frame and door, and replace it with a non-reversible
screw, or wood dowel. Drill a hole and pin your window frames, so that
if you leave them open while out they can only be opened a certain
height. If using timers while on vacation set them to come on at
staggered times, thus giving the impression that someone is home.
Also, remember to pick up tools used for yard work. Don't give the
potential burglar the implements to break into your
home.
IF YOU SEE IT, REPORT IT! We are here to
serve you, but you can help make your community safe and secure by reporting
suspicious activity.
The Fitzwilliam Police Department has officers available
to assist you with a home security survey, and has more Crime Prevention
information at the
station.
